The Line Between Open Educational Resources and Traditional Learning

Students need traditional learning set ups. They also need to learn how to be effective in the use of open educational resources or OERs if they want to keep abreast with the changing times. There has been a debate whether traditional learning methods are fast becoming a thing of the past or that OERs are only minimal supplements. The answer is that there is a line between these two which need to be defined so that we can differentiate their respective importance and applicability. If we examine these two resources, what will lay between them is coursework help and other additional needs students have.

Many students say that they need traditional campus-based lectures and they only explore OERs when tutors or teachers tell them to do so including coursework help. According to National Union of Students vice-president for further education Toni Pearce, an increase of number of students turning to the internet for learning and its frequency and its resulting bypass of traditional campus-based learning are only unfounded perceptions. She, who is also a candidate for president for the next term, has supporting evidence to her argument in the form of some findings from a survey performed by the NUS. The point of Ms Pearce is that traditional learning is and will still be the biggest building block of student learning.

On the other hand, some universities are taking the leading in integrating open source in higher education and that the higher education community should start involving the public sector in looking into maximizing its potential, says University of Oxford OSS Watch service manager Scott Wilson. The benefits of open source is yet to be availed of by many areas of the UK public sector even though the method of sharing and gaining knowledge is already on track in the industry and consumer technology. Still the same, coursework help and related requirements of students can be found in the borderline of the two fields of the explored and the unexplored. Overall, traditional learning methods, open educational resources or open source are all required by the modern student and learner.
